Modernizing Greek Nostalgia
Branding and Packaging
In Belgrade, Greece exists as a sun-bleached memory - a place of summer holidays and shared Orthodox roots, but rarely understood beyond souvlaki and Halkidiki postcards. A new café and Greek product store sought to change that. Their vision: to transport Belgrade to Crete through minimalist design, letting the flavors (and stories) of artisanal cheeses, herbal teas, and honey take center stage. But how do you evoke the warmth of a Cretan village without leaning on clichés like blue domes or plaster ruins?
Challenge
The owner faced a paradox: Cultural familiarity without depth: Belgradians loved Greece as a vacation spot but couldn’t name a single Cretan cheese. Aesthetic tension: Traditional Greek design (ornate, colorful) clashed with their modern, urban Belgrade location. Sensory overload: The space had to balance café coziness, retail practicality, and cultural education—without feeling like a museum.
Objective
We crafted a "less mythology, more meaning" approach: Branding: A custom wordmark blending the sharp angles of Belgrade’s Brutalist architecture with the organic flow of Cretan pottery strokes. Interior Design: Whitewashed walls and oak shelves (nodding to Cretan tavernas) paired with modular, Scandinavian-style furniture for versatility. Packaging: Minimalist kraft paper labels with hidden details—UV-printed Cretan herb illustrations visible only in sunlight, inviting discovery. Simple boxes wrapped in paper resembling natural materials - cretan wood, stone, earth. Storytelling: Menus included QR codes linking to stories of the producers (e.g., a third-generation beekeeper in Rethymno).
Results
Opening week results: Sold out of 80% of imported Greek products, with 40% of customers returning within a month. Cultural ripple: Regular "Meet the Maker" nights with Cretan producers (via Zoom, soon to become in-person events) became a signature event, with waitlists.
